Concord Lego Team Tristan, Colin, Sofia, Aston and Robert were delighted to win the First Lego League Challenge regional final at the University of Birmingham. Winning their regional competition means that they will go on to compete at national level later in the year.

The team have been designing, building and programming their robot since September to take part in the competition.

First Lego League tournaments involve building and programming a Lego robot to undertake challenges set by the competition organiser. The robot must be autonomously complete a series of tasks on a “mission board” to score as many points as possible.

The team took part in the Robot Game, and also had to prepare two presentations, one on the process and challenges designing the robot and an innovation project which involves solving a real world problem related to this year’s theme of technology and the oceans.

They chose to research the use of 3D printing to create artificial coral reefs, creating their own designs and investigating the viability of their use. Throughout the day, all of the teams are also judged on “Core Values” which requires a team to be respectful and inclusive to others.

Concord’s team won the Robot Game comfortably and scored highly in the Innovation Project, Robot Design and Core Values parts of the competition. When all of the point were counted they were overall regional winners. As well as receiving trophies for their regional wins, this means they have qualified for the UK national final to be held in May, the first time a Concord team has achieved this.

The day was a great success and all of the students enjoyed competing in Birmingham. Tristan and Colin summed up their experience: “It was such an amazing opportunity to combine two of our favourite things – LEGO and Coding! Huge thanks to all our teammates for working together so well; and most importantly to Mr Weston and Mrs Arthur for organising this event.”

Concord runs its own Lego League with workshops for local primary schools.
